Installment #33 - Free Insulting E-cards

I was feeling a bit devilish today and wanted to send my best friend a mean little insulting e-card. So, naturally I had to check on a few sites to see what I could come up with. I looked up 15 sites and came up with 7 "okay" sites and one too new to evaluate. So, that's 7 sites that were definite "no-no's"! Here are my results:

BAD:
  • 1.ntysbrf.com (Avast blocked some malware trying to download!)

  • mrfreefree.com
  • dogpile.com

  • superlaugh.com
  • nobel4tech.com
NEW:
  • bogblocker.com
GOOD:
Do people even send e-cards anymore? The majority of them are dangerous as hell! That's why I quit sending them and I was a big fan - loved sending them, especially for birthdays and holidays - sucks the jerks that make webstes dangerous had to mess up this used-to-be fantastic feature of the Internet. I hope one day we can use them again!

    I think you're being way overly cautious pertaining to certain sites that I find completely harmless. I've never once had a virus or anything that caused problems on my computer that I could not handle myself. And it's been a long time since I've had any infections.

    Sometimes a site is infected with malware with the host using third party apps unknowingly that are dangerous. Or the host is unaware that said third parties installed without their permissions. When hosts do find out, usually the culprit(s) are purged and their websites are safe once again. You have to understand that SiteAdvisor WOT warnings are not always totally correct with false positives or their lists are not up to date.

    My suggestions if you haven't already installed and currently using them.

    Spybot Search & Destroy. It's a memory hog but I also enable Teatimer.

    PeerGuardian2 P2P blocker- Many times I have to unblock HTTP to view a site that's actually safe; usually it tends to be ads. There's nothing wrong about it but it is good to see in the log what it is blocking, the IP range, source & destination, and the type of protocol.

    IE Privacy Keeper - Not only will this clean up browser (IE or FF)and usage tracks through multiple overwriting but I've used this in the past to rid of trojans that my anti-spyware programs have detected but can't seem to get rid of especially duplicates found using a different file name. Just right click on the file, and select "Secure Delete" in the context menu.


    I find these two much better in detecting links containing: trojans, dialers, and malware.

    Dr.Web anti-virus link checker extension. Despite the reviews, it works on FF 3.0.1 for me.

    Thank you so much for your input. I tend to operate by the "Better safe than sorry" principle. I have had too many problems in the past - some I have been able to fix myself, some I have had to take it in to a pro. Once, long ago, when I first started using a computer, I had to trash it completely. This was before so many fantastic security-related programs came into fruition.

    I personally use: Avast, Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spyware Guard, WinPatrol, as well as CCleaner, Cleanup, Windows Defender, and HiJack This (after studying how to interpret the logs myself!)

    I don't take the advice of WOT and SiteAdvisor completely - I check them out myself - I check my notes from years past - both experiences and info from my friends' experiences. I look at their links, their third party cookies (some are okay, some are not), user review, and the various info available about their downloads.
